The Wheel warns: "The Snip" report Cuts to Public Services Hidden
The wheel to support a national body and for the community and nonprofit organizations, today warned that, if implemented, on board "Snip" Nua proposed cuts in funding for the community and voluntary organizations to effectively reduce an additional amount of funding for basic public services in areas such as health, education and social welfare, the already stressed out for savage cuts elsewhere in the report.
Deirdre Garvey, Chief Executive of the wheel, said the target = "_blank"> McCarthy report does not confirm that local clubs and provide essential public services in areas such as education, mental health, Disabilities and welfare of very vulnerable people. Many of the organizations providing these services are dependent on funds from the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs – one of the ministries targeted for closure of the report.
"The proposed cut of 64% in the allocation for the Community and supports voluntary sector, such as the local community grants scheme, a Community system for the elderly and support for volunteering Community and voluntary organization, the ability to essential services at the most vulnerable people in society to provide weaken, "said Garvey. She added that, if implemented, the proposed abolition of the RAPID system, a 59% reduction in funds for local and community development and programs and would reduce a 20% cut in funding for the Community Services program, staff from the Live Register, the support services available to the growing Number of people in need.
Mrs. Garvey said The Wheel is also deeply concerned about the following proposals contained in the report:
Elimination of the Active Office and the immediate cessation of the implementation of the recommendations published by the Task Force on active citizenship citizenship.
"The government calls the Promoting active citizenship as a national priority in 2007. We believe that active citizenship and social entrepreneurship is the key to economic and social recovery, and that the relatively small savings that although the implementation of this proposal (€ 100,000) could be obtained, is far from the long-term benefits of active citizenship initiative prevailed, "said Ms. Garvey.
The effective suspension of funding for training in employment
"Continuing education for those who already have a job are essential if we are in the direction of an" intelligent Economy "on the way, government can not break its longstanding commitment to fund training to help in the workplace -. Because if it works, is it effectively undermined the foundations of future economic recovery. "
Mrs. Garvey concluded, is not acceptable that the government limited the ambition is to "minimize" the impact of the proposed cuts to the most vulnerable in Irish society. "The government must commit itself to actively Protect the most vulnerable in the current crisis and the decisions that this commitment. We can not afford further cuts in our community and voluntary Infrastructure at a time when a growing number of people are forced from our services. In response to the recommendations of this report must be government of the need of a robust social infrastructure recognize that is capable to protect citizens from becoming vulnerable. It takes courage to make decisions affecting the economy in the service of people can take, "she said.
